David Shoalts is a reporter and columnist for The Globe and Mail. A native of Wainfleet, Ont., David joined The Globe in 1984 after working at the Calgary Herald, Calgary Sun and Toronto Sun. He graduated in 1978 from the journalism program at Conestoga College and also attended the University of Waterloo.

In 2009, David and Paul Waldie of the Globe's Report on Business won the Outstanding Sportswriting Award from Sports Media Canada, the Canadian chapter of the International Sports Press Association, the largest association of sports media in the world. They were recognized for their work covering the troubles of the Phoenix Coyotes. He has covered the Toronto Maple Leafs and the NHL since 1990 and became a hockey columnist in 2003. He is the author of three books, the latest being Hockey Fight In Canada (Douglas & McIntyre), the story of how the CBC lost Hockey Night In Canada and the intrigue surrounding the fight between Rogers and Bell Canada for a Canadian institution. The book will be released in the fall of 2018.
